Shikaden Daitenmoku

During the last week of September, we practiced the daitemoku, one of the Shikaden procedures. The water container was curved bamboo, and the daitemoku utensils included a daitemoku stand, a tenmoku tea bowl, and a Japanese-style tea container. The tea scoop was a Rikyu-style ivory tea scoop, and the lid rest was made of green bamboo.

In this particular tea ceremony, we learned many new aspects, such as folding the fukusa (a silk cloth) in shin-style, when cleaning the tea stand and the ivory tea scoop, the etiquette of supporting the tea bowl with the left hand when pouring hot water or cold water into it, and raising the chasen (tea whisk) three times, and more.

We also gradually came to understand that the folding the fukusa during the purification process varies depending on whether the utensils are of Chinese or Japanese origin, among other things.
