In preparation, we readied the indigo-dyed water container with a lacquered lid and placed the Nakatsuji Chaire (tea container) in a Shifuku, a small silk bag, on top of the owakin silk cloth. Subsequently, we prepared the Black Raku Chawan (tea bowl) by arranging the chakin (tea cloth), chasen (tea whisk), and chashaku (tea scoop) inside.

The owakin is crafted from a special fabric favored by previous generations, a renowned antique textile known as “kobukusa.” Within this procedure, we learned how to handle the owakin. There is a specific method for lifting it: place your right-hand pinky finger beneath the owakin, while using the other fingers to hold the Nakatsugi chaire. This gesture is truly elegant.
