Tea Lesson in July

Several years ago, I planted a bamboo that struggled to grow, but this year it finally became lush and green, swaying gently in the breeze. Inspired by its beauty, I invited my students to write their Tanabata wishes on tanzaku and hang them on the bamboo. Their wishes ranged from “May I perform the tea ceremony beautifully” and “I will work hard to earn my tea name” to the ambitious “World Peace!”

During the first week of July, we practiced the Habuta and Arai Chakin procedures.

The sweet served was “Mukuge” (Rose of Sharon), made by Mrs. Rust of Sabi-an. Modeled after the pink flowers blooming in our garden, it featured a delicate white bean paste filling with a hint of lemon.
