Kasane Jawan

At the beginning of October, we’re planning a Chaji (formal tea gathering) to celebrate three students who have recently received their tea names.
For this occasion, we decided to serve guests in groups of eight using the Kasane-jawan temae (stacked tea bowls), so we’ve been brushing up on this procedure after quite a long time.

Out came the Hōrai-jawan tea bowls, which had been tucked away deep in storage for many years.
We also practiced sharing a single bowl of koicha (thick tea)—something we hadn’t done in a long while. It felt meaningful to once again experience the traditional way of drinking koicha, something we had not been able to practice properly since the pandemic.
