Before returning to St. Louis, I visited Hayashi senses in Fushimi to say goodbye, as I wouldn’t be able to see her for a while. Since the end of the COVID pandemic, she has closed her tea ceremony practice …
During our conversation, the topic came up that I had asked a potter in St. Louis to create a set of tea utensils (kaigu), but they still hadn’t been delivered. In response, she kindly entrusted me with a full set of her own kaigu. I carefully repacked them to ensure they wouldn’t break during transport, and brought them back to St. Louis.
Our recent tea practice was a nagata (long-board) usucha hearth procedure to unveil and make use of those utensils.
