今月の利休百首から抜粋した句は、
「右の手をあつかうときは わが心 左の方にあるとしるべし」
お稽古を始めて、まだ間もない生徒さんのお点前をお稽古していると、使っている方の手には意識が行っているのですが、使っていない方の手が宙ぶらりんになっていたり、きちんと手のひらをそろえて膝の上においてなかったりで、全体のお点前の姿がどこか気の抜けた締まらないものになっていることを感じて、『使っていない手を意識して。』と良く注意していました。
この句を百首の中から見つけた時『400年以上も前に、利休様はこの点も指摘してくださっていたのだ!』と感激したのを覚えています。
“When using your right hand, remember to have your mind on your left hand.”
When I teach a beginning student, I often notice the free hand is not on the lap or is too relaxed, and this makes the individual’s appearance look a little sloppy. I often remind students to pay attention to their free hands. For me, Rikyu’s four-hundred-year-old poem reaffirmed the importance of the free hand.
