春の和菓子 Spring Wagashi

2月と3月初めの練りきりのお菓子『古都の梅』と『雛の桃』

今月のお菓子作りは2月の最終週になってしまいました。2月に相応しい花は梅ということで、紅梅の練り切りを作ったのですが、最終週に来られなかった生徒さんには、3月にお出しすることになります。そこで、遊び心で3月にお出しする際には『雛の桃』と銘名して出すことにしました!名前で梅にも桃にも見えてくるから不思議です。

At  the end of February, one of my students and I made nerikiri. In Japan the seasonal flower for this month is plum. Its flowers symbolize the beginning of spring, and we enjoy both white and red plum flowers and their fragrances then. “Kyoto plum” is our name for nerikiri. For the students who missed this class last month, we served the same nerikiri but changed the name of these sweets. Because March 3rd is traditionally Girls’ Day in Japan, we decided the treat would be “Peach of Girl’s Day” instead. We celebrated by displaying Japanese ornamental dolls (mainly of the emperor and empress) with peach flowers. Both plum and peach flowers are dark pink, small, and beautiful, so I hope we can justify our deception. No matter what we called them, we enjoyed each.
